My plans to go round to Donavan’s today had been waylaid by my brother. When he’d come home the previous night from wherever he’d been, he’d gotten a bee in his bonnet that we were going to go shopping whether I wanted to or not.

So there I was at nine o’clock on a Friday morning, listening to Christmas music that was clashing dreadfully from the different shop doorways. I was surrounded by manic shoppers in the new mall on the outskirts of town while being dragged around by my brother.

“Don’t you have work today? You don’t normally have Friday off,” I whined.

He halted for a minute to give me a ‘stop messing’ glare. “I took a day’s holiday. I have to go back to Rivertown next week because of the stupid accusations Brent filed against Jamie. You remember Jamie, the guy I visit with to carry out the bank audits?”

Not waiting for me to answer, he carried on walking, tugging me behind him as he explained more.

“That dick Brent is trying to say that not only was Jaime sexually harrassin’ him, but that he might have misappropriated money from client accounts. The poor guy has been suspended. Everyone knows Jamie would never do either of those things. It’s all bogus. But protocols have to be followed, so I’ve got to go through all the accounts. That means I’ll probably be stuck up there for a week at least. As it’s coming up to Christmas in two weeks, it wasn’t like they could say no to me taking a break to get ready for the holidays,” he huffed, while his gaze moved from shop to shop, searching for god knows what.

I stopped listening. What he considered getting ready for Christmas, I had no clue. I usually did all the present buying, food shopping, and decorating for Christmas. And I'd thought we were there to buy clothes, not to get ready for Christmas.

Hope flared inside me that maybe I’d gotten it all wrong and that I was going to escape Gabriel making me try shit on. Then he pulled me into a shop I’d never considered buying clothes from, and I let out a sigh of relief. Sadly, it was premature because the next thing I knew he was talking to the shop assistant and telling him that I needed a whole new wardrobe of clothes.

Panic clawed up my throat and burned my chest, and I shuddered when the skinny shop assistant eyed me and then rubbed his hands together. I could all but see the glee shining from his eyes at the thought of obtaining a big commission on the sale as he strolled towards me, assessing me with every step he took.

Standing naked in front of the mirror the night before hadn't felt as bad as having his gaze roam over me now did. With the urge to grab something off the racks to shield myself, my hands balled into fists and I shoved them into my baggy pants. I
